Antonio has to perform a play about the birth of Christ and he is left in school with the bad crowd. They are all forced to play roles, Antonio being a shepherd. This is ironic, as the corrupt and misguided people are playing the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. It may be a symbol of how the Catholic church is corrupted and how Antonio is a shepherd to light the way to the truth.
